About an hour inside, plus the climb: the official site says it takes 45 minutes to an hour to walk from the car parks to the abbey entrance.
From the village gate, the Grande Rue and the abbey staircase are steep. The tourist office counts about 350 steps up to the abbey. Take it slowly and use the ramparts for a breather and a view.
What will you see inside the abbey?
The abbey church on the summit, the cloister, the monks' refectory, the Knights' Hall and the great wheel once used to haul supplies.
The route runs one way, up to the church on the summit and back down through a thousand years of building. The cloister, hanging above the sea with its double row of columns, and the long vaulted refectory are the rooms most visitors remember.
Is there an audio guide or a guided tour?
Yes: the abbey rents a digital tablet guide for €6, and many tours include an audio app instead.
