Every picture of the Mont floating on the sea was taken at a very high tide, around sunset or at night. On an ordinary day, the tide stays out in the bay and the Mont rises from wide, shining sand flats.
That is not a disappointment: the flats are part of what makes the place so striking. But if you want the island effect, you need to pick your date.

The Mont is fully surrounded by water only during the biggest spring tides, a few days a year, usually around the spring and autumn equinoxes. The high-water peak often comes in the evening, after day trips have left. Arrive one to two hours before high tide to watch the water rise, and never walk onto the sands without a certified guide.
When is Mont Saint-Michel surrounded by water?
Only at the highest spring tides, which happen a few days a year, mostly around the March and September equinoxes.
The local authorities publish a tide calendar each year. In 2026 their biggest tides were on 14 August and 12 September, both with high water after 9 PM. On most other days the sea does not reach the foot of the Mont at all.

The authorities advise reaching the Mont before the water surrounds it and expecting to wait around 1 to 1.5 hours after high tide before the bridge approach reopens. Follow the signs and instructions on the day: the water can rise quickly.
Can you walk across the bay?
Yes, but only with a certified guide: the tide comes in fast and there are patches of quicksand.
Guided bay walks leave from the mainland and last a few hours, barefoot across sand and mud. They do not fit into a day trip from Paris, so plan them for an overnight stay.
Is low tide worth seeing too?
Yes: at low tide you see the vast sand flats, the salt meadows and the grazing sheep that give the bay its character.
